Walkability

What makes cities
walkable?

Principles for a city that preserves its historic fabric, is walkable, beautiful and made for people — with notes specific to Antalya.

01 — 15-Minute Principle

Supermarket, school, healthcare, park — all within walking distance. Every neighbourhood must be complete in itself.

02 — Mixed Use

Housing, work, cafés and green space in the same neighbourhood. Mono-functional zoning kills cities.

03 — Active Ground Floor

No empty shopfronts. Ground floors must house active, inviting, outward-facing uses.

04 — Human Scale

Narrow street, wide pavement. People before cars. Traffic-calming measures.

05 — 15-min Park Requirement

A park within 15 minutes' walk from anywhere. Seating, shade, water.

Specific to Antalya: Hot climate is the biggest difference. A shaded pedestrian route map, awning regulations and a mandatory plane-tree policy are critical. Barcelona's Ramblas and Dubrovnik's narrow stone streets can serve as models.

06 — Safety Perception

Lighting standards and night-time visibility. Social surveillance that keeps people outdoors.
